Scripture Readings in Orthodox Worship
Description
The scripture lessons of the Orthodox Church through the course of its liturgical seasons and feasts. Scriptural texts are interpreted within the context of the Church's worship and prayer.
From the Publisher:
The Orthodox Christian Church liberally and adeptly incorporates Holy Scriptures into liturgical services, using both typical exegesis and allegory for the benefit of the worshipping community. In this book, the author examines the various lessons from Scripture in relation to the seasons and feasts throughout the liturgical year. He especially analyzes the use of psalmody and the overall logistical arrangement of Old Testament readings within the services.
In so doing, he introduces the reader to the mind of the Church, since the early church fathers who developed the liturgical cycles chose psalms, prophecies, canticles, parables, and epistle and gospel readings to proclaim and ponder the evangelical message of the Crucified and Risen Christ. He also allows the reader to hear the voice of the praying Church, which remains true to God's Word Himself--the subject and content of Scripture.
